Cavafy Symposium 2019

Following the huge success of the Cavafy Symposium 2017, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, in cooperation with the BA Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med), the Ministries of Culture of Greece and Egypt, Cairo Opera House and the Greek Cultural Center, and under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Cairo, organizes the 15th International Cavafy Symposium 2019 to be held in Cairo on 1 October and in Alexandria on 2 and 3 October 2019. The Symposium focuses on the implications of Cavafy’s work on politics and civilization. The symposium participants include literary figures from Egypt and Greece as well as internationally established scholars, such as Bruce Robbins, Old Dominion Professor in the Humanities, Columbia University, Maria Boletsi, Professor of Literature at Leiden University, Marina Laskaridis, Chair of Modern Greek, University of Amsterdam, and Duaa Salameh, Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Amman-Jordan among others.
Additionally, the BA Art Exhibitions and Collections Department organizes a photo exhibition entitled: “Hidden Memory: “Averof”, the Greek School of Alexandria”, which pays homage to the legend of the Greek school “Averof”.
The symposium concludes with a concert by Kostas Ganotis, presenting Cavafy’s poetry, accompanied by music, with the participation of Haig Yazdjian (Oud) and Nikos Kalantzakos (Keyboards).
