Serageldin is Honored at Cairo University on the Occasion of the University’s Centennial

Alexandria— As part of the celebrations marking Cairo University Centennial, Ahmed Lotfy El-Sayed Forum will host Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria on Saturday, 23 February 2008, to give a lecture within the series of pioneer gatherings and memory talks. Cairo University will honor Dr. Serageldin as a graduate of the University and will present a short documentary on his biography, followed by a welcome speech by Dr. Ali Abdel Rahman, President of Cairo University.

The Honorary ceremony will start with Dr. Serageldin’s lecture about his memories as a student at Cairo University and his vision on the future of the University, and will be followed by an open discussion with the University students and graduates, moderated by Dr. Abdullah Al-Tatawy, Vice-President of Cairo University.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Ismail Serageldin was born in Guiza in 1944. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree(First Class Honors) in Engineering from Cairo University in 1964; and Masters' degree (with Distinction) in Regional Planning in 1968, and a PhD in the Role of Education in Development, in 1972, from Harvard University.

Serageldin has served in a number of capacities at the World Bank, including Vice-President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (1992–1998), and for Special Programs (1998–2000). He has published over 50 books and monographs and over 200 papers on a variety of topics including biotechnology, rural development, sustainability, and the value of science to society. He has received 21 honorary doctorates from distinguished universities all over the world, last of which Doctor of Society Development, Khazar University, Baku, Azerbaijan in 2007.
