The BA Signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Environment Facility (GEF)

Alexandria— Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Mr. Rob D. van den Berg, Director of GEF Evaluation Office, signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim to exchange knowledge and expertise on general environmental issues including climate change; assess the sustainability of the environmental system; and promote the cooperation on environmental issues between the BA and the GEF.

Dr. Salah Soliman, Advisor to the BA Director, stated that the memorandum reflects the BA's interest in preserving the environment as a major element for growth and progress, especially at a time when humanity is facing the challenge of climate change.

He added that as part of the memorandum of understanding, the BA and GEF will co organize an international workshop, 10-13 May 2008 entitled "The International Workshop on Evaluating Climate Change and Development". The workshop will introduce sound practices for evaluating climate change and its impact on developmental projects and programs and means to reduce climate change and adapt to its impacts.
