Ambassador Ali Maher, Director of the IPS, stated that the seminar aims at building a global network to encourage states to shift resources away from military spending and towards greater investment in sustainable development. Ambassador Maher added that the International Peace Bureau, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1910, and enjoys the membership of 280 organizations from 70 countries, is a co- organizer of the seminar.

Ambassador Ali Maher mentioned that the seminar will bring together experts, advocates, diplomats, students, journalists and civil society representatives from many countries to draw attention to the negative impact of weapons on the development process; to promote disarmament; and to integrate these efforts into peace and social justice campaigns around the world.
