The BA, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is organizing a conference titled “Toward a Comprehensive Arab Strategy to Fight Extremism”, under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The conference will be inaugurated on Saturday, 3 January 2015 and will be attended by Dr. Nabil al-Arabi, Secretary-General of the Arab League; Ambassador Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Dr. Gaber Asfour, Minister of Culture.
The conference will be held over the course of three days, and about two hundred Egyptian and Arab intellectuals and media people, who represent different intellectual ideas and age groups, will be in attendance. It will also be attended by Islamic and Christian leaders. The conference will include a number of sessions in which the phenomenon of religious extremism and the role that intellectuals should play in fighting it will be discussed. The discussions will cover issues relating to education, media, religious discourse, and national security. Special attention will be paid to certain topics, such as cultural and religious diversity in the region and freedom of speech and expression.
As mandated by former President Adly Mansour at the Arab Summit in Kuwait (March 2014), a strategy will be announced at the end of the conference and will be presented at the next Arab Summit in March 2015.
