Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, and Dr. Nabil Al-Araby, General Secretary of the Arab League of States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both entities, within the Day of the Arab Document which was celebrated at the Arab League headquarter in Cairo on 23 December 2013.

The MoU emerges from the mutual desire to foster professional relations between the two bodies in the fields of libraries, documentation and information, and aspires to set a long term cooperation framework to put on joint projects in an aim to accumulate awareness on the written heritage, and contribute to enriching bibliographical heritage on the regional and international levels.

Cooperation fields include cataloguing, automatization, digitization, fostering joint projects between libraries in the Arab world, and launching a virtual center for the Arabic Book.

The MoU also refers to research projects in the fields of libraries, information, museums, archives, bibliographical heritage, books, published manuscripts (in all its forms— printed, digital and microfilms), developing programs to restore and evaluate bibliographical and documentary heritage, and encouraging book and information exchange.

The BA and the Arab League will co-organize events for all updates in the fields, share expertise, and hold training programs for Arab practitioners.
