On Tuesday, 21 June 2022, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized its annual festivity that commemorates the scientist Eratosthenes, the third librarian of the ancient Library of Alexandria.
The festivity, which targets school students aged 12 – 16, has been held since 2003 in Alexandria and Aswan, marking the first measurement of the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago in both cities.
Students in both governorates conducted the Eratosthenes experiment (on the BA Plaza and in Aswan concurrently) to measure the Earth’s circumference. Around 300 participants in Alexandria and 250 in Aswan took part in the festivity.
Governorates that participated in the event included Minya, Monufia, Sohag, Kafr El-Sheikh, Cairo, Beheira, Sharqia, Damietta, Beni Suef, South Sinai, Port Said, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Qalyubia, and Matrouh, in addition to the participation of several countries, such as France, Argentina, Britain, Spain, Portugal, Thailand, Greece, and Italy.
