“Alexandrian Heritage Days 2021” Lecture Series at the BA

The BA Alexandria and Mediterranean Research Center (Alex Med) and the BA Writing and Scripts Center, in collaboration with the Centre d’Études Alexandrines (CEAlex), are organizing a series of lectures as part of the annual event “Alexandrian Heritage Days”. The lectures will take place from 14 to 17 November 2021, in the BA Conference Center, and are as follows:

  • The Contribution of the Description De l’Egypte in Archaeology in Alexandria (14 November 2021; 4:00 pm; BACC Delegates Hall). The lecture is delivered by Dr. Marie-Dominique Nenna, Head of Scientific Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, France. The lecture is based on the exhibition “1798 – 1801: French Expedition Scholars Paint Alexandria”, organized by the Centre d’Études Alexandrines, in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which preserves the preliminary sketches of the Description De l’Egypte.
  • The Motto of Alexandria between the Past and Present (15 November 2021; 2:00 pm; BACC Delegates Hall). The lecture is delivered by Ms. Rana El-Zalabany, Researcher at the BA Writing and Scripts Center, and features a historical and archaeological presentation on the motto of Alexandria, together with its importance as a city and commercial port throughout the ages. The lecture will also tackle the significance of the goddess Isis, pictured today on the motto of Alexandria, and will highlight the role she played in ancient Egypt.
  • Book launch of the Arabic translatin of The Greeks and the Making of Modern Egypt (16 November 2021; 2:00 pm; BACC Delegates Hall). The book is written by Alexander Kitroeff and translated by Dr. Amira Nowaira, with a foreword by Dr. Moustafa Elfeki.
  • The German Expedition “Ernst von Sieglin” in Alexandria, from 1898 to 1902 (17 November 2021; 2:00 pm; BACC Lecture Hall). The lecture is given by Dr. Ingrid Laube, Classical Archaeology Scholar, who is currently working on a book about the archeaological elements of the Serapeum in Alexandria.

Additionally, the BA is organizing a walking tour, led by Dr. Mohammed Hassan, on Saturday, 20 November 2021. The tour includes a historical reading of the inscriptions found in old mosques in Alexandria, which reflect the features of urbanism and cultural and historical diversity of the city.
