Following the Annual Partner Meeting of the World Digital Library (WDL), held at the Library of Congress on 5 December 2012, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, chaired the WDL Executive Council Meeting, which convened the following day to review progress made within the past year, and to discuss priorities for the coming year.
Launched in April 2009, the WDL website features the world’s best cultural contributions. With 32 partner organizations from all over the world, the project aims at narrowing the cultural gap and promoting understanding between different cultures and peoples. The WDL functions in seven languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish – and includes content in more than forty languages.
The BA has been one of the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of the WDL since its inception in 2006. The BA is contributing to the project with its digital collection and technical expertise, as the ICT Sector at the BA has been chosen to co-chair the Technical Architecture Committee with the Library of Congress. The Committee is mainly responsible for establishing policies and guidelines needed to govern the technical aspects of the WDL regarding the tools and technology used.
