The 84th International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) general conference and assembly will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 24–30 August 2018. The theme of the conference is “Transform Libraries, Transform Societies”, with the additional tagline “Reaching out to the hard to reach” which was chosen to highlight the influential role libraries play in the development and transformation of nations and societies.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), the Arabic Library Standards, represented by Ms. Rania Osman, Head of Libraries of the Future Section at Bibliotheca Alexandrina will be participating in the conference. Moreover, she will be contributing to the pre-conference event held on the margin of the 84th IFLA conference; namely “Diversity of Data: RDA in the International Context”. The latter is organized by the Resource Description and Access (RDA) Board, and will take place at the National Library of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 23 August 2018.
In the first session of the event—which will cover tales from the field about the implementation of RDA around the globe—Ms. Osman will highlight the factors that led to the decision of the BA translating the RDA into Arabic. Moreover, she will present the Arab cataloguing community involved in the Arabic translation process, from inside and outside Egypt.
It is worth mentioning that the IFLA conference, covering various themes, is attended every year by eminent figures in the field of library and information science worldwide. The IFLA WLIC 2018 is jointly organized by IFLA, Librarians Association of Malaysia and National Library of Malaysia and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).
