BA Mourns the Loss of Dr. Ahmed Zewail

With a heavy heart, the BA management and staff mourn the loss of one of the most prominent figures in Egypt and one of the most renowned scientists around the world: Dr. Ahmed Zewail, member of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Advisory Board and Founding Member of its Board of Trustees (2001–2006), who passed away on Tuesday, 2 August 2016. May he rest in peace.
Dr. Zewail was the 1999 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for his pioneering research that paved the way for the study of chemical reactions in a minuscule timescale known as the femtosecond (which represents one quadrillionth of a second). He was the Linus Pauling Chair Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Physics at Caltech (California Institute of Technology), and the Director of the Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology. He held many honorary degrees from around the world and has been widely recognized with honors and orders of merits. Ahmed Zewail was an elected member of numerous international academies and societies.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the BA, offers his condolences to Dr. Zawail’s family on behalf of himself, the institution and all the BA staff.
