Alexandria—HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Egypt's First Lady and Chairperson of the BA Board of Trustees; Mrs. Gihan El-Sadat, wife of Late Egyptian President Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat; Minister Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture; Minister Fayza Abul Naga, Minister of International Cooperation; General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria, in addition to several other public figures, inaugurated on Tuesday, 17 February 2009, a comprehensive project documenting the life of President Sadat, including a museum, a digital archive and a Culturama show.

In his opening speech, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, said that the inauguration of the Sadat museum is a tribute to a man who sacrificed his life for his country, and who was the hero of war and peace. Serageldin added that the project, under the auspices of HE Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak and with the support of Mrs. Gihan El-Sadat, underlines one of the BA four objectives, to be “the world’s window on Egypt”.

He pointed out that the BA not only inaugurated the Sadat Museum encompassing a collection of his personal belongings, but also produced a documentary about his life that will be shown in the museum, a Culturama show about Sadat’s life, as well as a digital archive that takes visitors back in history exploring the different aspects of Sadat’s life through photos, documentaries, documents, speeches, as well as newspaper articles written by President Sadat himself. Serageldin stated that they intend to complement the digital archive by constantly adding different material to it.

At the end of his speech, Serageldin thanked all partners who cooperated with the BA and especially the Sadat family, Fawzi Abdel Hafez’s family (the Private Secretary of Sadat), Egypt State Information Service, Akhbar Elyoum newspaper, Dar Elhelal and Dar Eltahrir publishing houses in addition to the News Sector in the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU).

The Sadat Museum is the first of its kind in Alexandria. It is launched in the context of the BA endeavors in documenting Egypt’s modern and contemporary history. A venue of 200 square meters was allocated to the Sadat Museum next to the Planetarium Science Center. Before entering the museum, visitors will have the opportunity to watch the Culturama Show; nine interactive screens each displaying a specific period of the life of Sadat.
