Minister of Culture Inaugurates 4th International Summit of the Book

Egyptian Minister of Culture, Helmy El-Namnam, inaugurated the 4th International Summit of the Book hosted by the BA under the theme “Book, Reading, and Technology” on 6–7 November 2015.

Launched in 2012 by the Library of Congress, this is the very first Summit of the Book to be held in the Arab world and Africa to discuss the book and its related topics. The Summit was previously held in Washington, Singapore, and Paris in 2012, 2013, and 2014 respectively. The Summit revolves around the following themes: Technology and Manuscripts, Books and Cultural Exchange, the E-book versus the Print Book, and the Issue of the Book in Developing Countries.

Among the participants in the Summit were Jennifer Nicholson, Secretary General of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA); Dr. Khaled eL-Halabi, President of the Arab Federation of Libraries and Information (AFLI); John Tsebe, President of the African Library Associations & Institutions (AFLIA); and Dr. Raouf Abdel-Hafiz Helal, Head of the Central Administration of the Egyptian National Library. During the opening of the Conference, the BA celebrated the new full Arabic publication of MARC 21.

Also taking part in the conference were a number of distinguished international figures, speakers, intellectuals, academics, and professionals in the field of literature, libraries, culture, publishing, and technology.
