Dr. Ahmed Abdallah Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, welcomed Mr. Kang Jeong-won, Director of the National Hangeul Museum in South Korea, and his accompanying delegation, during a working visit that comes within the framework of activating the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two sides in 2023. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina was represented in this collaboration by the Academic Research Sector’s Writing and Scripts Center, with the aim of supporting joint work in the fields of academic research and cultural exchange.

The delegation members toured a number of museums and specialized sections, and visited the Culturama Hall. They were introduced to the most prominent scientific and cultural activities and programs implemented by the Library.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to develop future cooperation, foremost among which is the preparation for an international conference in South Korea in 2026 entitled “The History of Deciphering Ancient Civilizations' Writings,” which coincides with the celebration of Hangul Day in South Korea.

Dr. Zayed welcomed the initiative to hold the conference, stressing the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's readiness to participate with a delegation of specialists in the history of ancient writings, given the importance of this event in supporting scientific studies and deepening cultural communication between Egypt and South Korea.

It is worth noting that Hangul is the Korean writing system that was developed in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great. It is considered one of the most advanced and simple writing systems, characterized by its unique structure based on shapes that represent the pronunciation of letters. Hangul is a fundamental element of Korean cultural identity and is celebrated annually on its national day in recognition of its historical and cultural value.
