Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, said that the issue of illegal immigration is one of the most critical challenges facing the international community, and has recently gained importance due to its developmental and economic dimensions.
This came at the opening of the seminar "Illegal Immigration: Development and Investment in People", which was organized by the BA Misr Al-Ghad project. The event witnessed the participation of Ambassador Naela Gabr, Chairman of the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Immigration and Human Trafficking; Dr. Adela Ragab, Professor of Economics and Head of the Migration Studies Unit at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University; and Dr. Ayman Zuhri, an expert in migration and population studies and member of the National Council for Human Rights. It was moderated by Dr. Ramy Galal, member of the Egyptian Senate.
Dr. Ahmed Zayed stressed that Egypt has been a pathway for this type of migration for years, but it was able to permanently prevent the departure of illegal immigrants from its coasts, an act that was praised by several international institutions that rank Egypt among the first countries in the region to develop clear frameworks and policies to prevent illegal immigration.
For his part, Dr. Sameh Fawzy, Senior Researcher at the BA and Supervisor of Misr Al-Ghad project, said that the BA held an expanded conference on the phenomenon of illegal immigration in July 2021, which tackled this issue from the political and legal perspectives. He pointed out that the seminar will discuss the phenomenon through the cause of development, as it plays a key role in curbing illegal immigration through investment in people.
