Eratosthenes Festivity at the BA

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina organized its annual festivity that commemorates the scientist Eratosthenes, the third librarian of the ancient Library of Alexandria, on Monday, 21 June 2021.

The festivity has been held since 2003 in Alexandria and Aswan, marking the first measurement of the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago in both cities. It targets school students aged 12 – 16.

On 21 June of every year, students conduct the Eratosthenes experiment on the BA plaza to measure the Earth’s circumference. This year, a number of governorates have joined the festivity, including Beheira, Minya, Dakahlia, Gharbia, and Beni Suef.

Additionally, the festivity comprises fieldtrips to the Elephantine Island in Aswan, together with several workshops, lectures, and competitions broadcast live across different cities to compare measurement results.
