“The Revival of the Ancient Library of Alexandria” is the title of the lecture to be delivered by Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), to an audience of 5,000 librarians meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 22 to 27 August 2004. The meeting of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA’s) 70th General Conference and Council will discuss various issues like, Library and Research Services, Information Literacy, as well as, Science and Technology Libraries.
Later in the month, Dr. Serageldin is scheduled to chair the European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES) - Bridging the North-South Gap parallel session, held at the Genomics Momentum 2004, 29 August -1 September, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The European Union (EU) is providing €17 billion for all research over the sixth 5-year European science plan. Eagles wants the EU to allocate 5% of that to research relevant to developing country issues.
As Third World problems have come to pose humanitarian challenges for life scientists, a new dialogue is required in which the needs, the voices and the opinions of the emerging and developing countries be clearly identified, heard and heeded. This parallel session, organized by EAGLES will provide a platform on which leading scientists and humanists will explore and discuss new relationships in biotechnology which need to be established between North and South.
