2017–2018 Theater Production Grant Winners

Posted on

The BA Arts Center had received 23 submissions from theater director for its 2017–2018 Theater Production Grant. All submitted works were subjected to the following two-stage selection process:

Stage one: eliminating incomplete projects and works that do not meet the grant requirements (a total of three plays)

Stage two: having the 20 eligible plays assessed by a committee consisting of Dr. Samy Abdel Halim, Professor of Theatre (Acting and Directing) at the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts; critic Ahmed Khamees; and director Tamer Karam.

After the assessment process, the committee has announced that the three winning projects are:

  1. Alrjl althy walmar’a alty (The Man Who and the Woman That): written by Sameh Othman, directed by Sameh, and performed by Bedaya Group

  2. The Children of Anger and Love: written by Karam el Nggar, directed by Mohamed Mekki, and performed by The Dream Theater Troupe

  3. Barbed Wire: written by Sameh Othman, directed by Mohamed Taya, and performed by Mutiny Group

In case any of the aforementioned projects drops out for any reason, the project that came in fourth place will take over.

The BA Arts Center and the grant’s judging committee made the following recommendations:

  1. Organizing training courses on writing artistic projects

  2. Formulating general regulations that prohibit the selection of the same playwrights or directors as winners within a short period of time
