On the First Centennial Since his Death
The BA Publishes a Book Honoring Muhammad Abduh

Alexandria— The BA issued a book entitled "Imam Muhammad Abduh: A Century Since his Death", by Ibrahim El-Bayoumi Ghanem and Salah El-Din Elgohary, in collaboration with Dar Al Kitab Almasri in Cairo and Dar Al Kitab Allubnani in Beirut.

The book lies in 986 pages and includes the contributions of scientists and scholars, who participated in the seminar organized by the BA in December 2005, on the occasion of the first centennial since the death of Imam Muhammad Abduh,

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria and Dr. Mohamed Emara, Member of the Islamic Research Center (IRC) wrote the forward to the Book. The Book contains research papers, commentaries, and reports on the seminar. The seminar included deep ideological debates on different issues, as well as discussions on the various aspects of the personality of Imam Muhammad Abduh and his intellectual reform project.

The book addresses Imam Muhammad Abduh’s intellectual reform project in three sections; the first is on the knowledge authentication of the Imam’s project. The second section deals with the Imam’s efforts towards the renewal of Islamic thought and his interpretation of the Quran. The third section presents the life of Imam Muhammad Abduh on the political arena and his quest for reform, and tackles his role in politics, and his stance against the Khedive and the British occupation. It also reviews his methodology in the reform of Al-Azhar, awqaf (Religious Endowments), Shari’ah, educational reform, his relationship with civil associations, and women's issues.
