The Tours Guide Desk is located in the Foyer of the Library of Alexandria. Tours are being offered in the following languages: Arabic, English, French, Spanish and German.

During the tour, visitors are introduced to the historical background of the Ancient Library, the efforts made to build the New Library, the significance and concept behind this dazzling building as well as other information about the different sections of the Library of Alexandria.

The Receptionists are responsible for prior reservation either by phone, e-mail or personal contact for individuals and groups.

Kindly notice that the entrance tickets include guided tours and exhibitions.

1- School Visits

The BA welcomes pre-scheduled school groups, by the following regulations;

  • Reservations should be made at least 5 days in advance.
  • The Library Ticket does not include admission to the Planetarium Science Center. For Reservations please call ext: 2350. In case of visiting both the Planetarium and the library, please coordinate between the schedules of the two visits.
  • You have to buy library tickets to attend the Culturama Show.
  • Please contact the Visits Department in case of modifying the time or canceling the School Visit.
  • Please be there before time of the visit to have enough time to buy the Library tickets from the tickets booth located at Port Said Street, next to the conference center.

 2- Public Tours 

The Visits Department provides guided tours, for Families, Individuals and different Groups, every 15 minutes in different languages: Arabic, English, French, Spanish and German (according to the tour schedule below).

Tours for groups from universities, companies and travel agencies can be provided, upon immediate  request during the regular working hours, but it is recommended to reserve the tour two days in advance.

Regular Tour Direction

The Visits Department consists of guides who have received intensive training to lead an entertaining, and an enlightening tour for the visitors.

  1. The tour begins at Demetrius of  Phaleron Statue at the Library entrance. The guide starts by explaining to the guests the historical background of the Ancient Library and how it disappeared.
  2. The guide then describes how the revival of the project was launched, the phases of construction, and the description of the Library building externally. The group moves inside the Library to the glass triangle known as "Callimachus Triangle" to see an overwhelming view of the Reading Hall while the guide explains everything about the Library and its components.
  3. The guide then highlights some ICT projects of the Library.
  4. The tour then reaches the Exhibition Halls on B1 to visit some of the permanent Exhibitions. Our guides carefully highlights the masterpieces found in these exhibitions.


  • Admission into the Main Reading Area is restricted to ages 16 and above.
  • Children under 6 are not permitted in the Library. They can stay at the on-site daycare facility, located behind the Conference Center, provided they are accompanied by a parent.
  • Youth aged 6–16 are not permitted in the Main Reading Area unless with a tour group.
  • The Children’s Library and Young People’s Library are open to non-members throughout the year except during the summer and mid-year vacations. During those periods, non-members can learn about the services provided by the two Libraries through a brief guided tour offered several times a day.
  • Bags and other items are not allowed inside the Library and must be deposited at the safekeeping facility next to the ticket booths. However, wallets may be carried in all parts of the Library.
  • Clothes, food, and beverages cannot be stored in the safekeeping facility.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in any part of the Library. Smoking is also prohibited.
  • Personal books are not allowed inside the Library.
  • Tour guides who are not employed at the Library are not allowed to give tours, as the Library already provides guided tours in different languages. 
  • Photography is allowed everywhere inside the Library except in some exhibitions and museums.
  • Mobile phones must be turned off or switched to silent mode inside the Library.Violators will be subject to a fine of EGP 10.
  • The Library ticket includes admission to the Library, the permanent exhibitions, the Sadat Museum, and the Culturama. Collective tickets offer admission to all of the above plus the Antiquities Museum and the Manuscripts Museum. Tickets for just the Antiquities Museum or the Manuscripts Museum can be purchased from the booth located near the entrance of each museum.
  • Admission to the Planetarium Science Center requires a separate ticket, which is available at the entrance of the Planetarium.
  • The duration of a regular tour is about 30–45 minutes.
  • Prior reservation is highly recommended on Saturdays.
  • Prior reservation is also highly recommended for Spanish tours.
  • All public areas are wheelchair accessible. The Reading Area is equipped with elevators and ramps on each floor to facilitate wheelchair movement. Wheel chairs are available at the Visits Reception Desk.
  • In case the requested language is not available, the BA shall provide an Arabic-speaking tour guide to visitors already accompanied by their own tour guide, who will then be responsible for simultaneous translation.
