“Draw, Photograph, and Research” Competition at the BA

Posted on

The BA Antiquities Museum is organizing a competition entitled “Draw, Photograph, and Research” for the 15 – 20 age group, from 10 October to 10 November 2022.

The museum presents this annual competition for the eighth consecutive year, as it attaches special importance to museum education, in order to spread archaeological awareness among children and young people, develop their talents, and showcase their artistic creations. Based on the belief in multi-talent, the scope of the competition was expanded by adding a new section: Photography.

The statue of the Seated Scribe representing the minister Tib-em-Ankh was chosen to be the subject of this year’s “Draw, Photograph, and Research” competition, due to its importance during the Pharaonic era. The statue expresses the scribes who were able to read and write; they were highly regarded in the country because they were a minority. As the majority of the people were peasants who could not read or write, and the country was in dire need of clerks to manage its affairs, such as collecting taxes, writing charters, and organizing the people’s financial matters, the scribes were the link between the rulers and the people.

The BA Antiquities Museum possesses among its collection the statue of the Seated Scribe, which dates back to the era of the 5th Dynasty, during the reign of King Onas. This statue was discovered north of the Step Pyramid in Saqqara. It is made of pink granite, and is based on a white limestone foundation. The scribe appears seated with a papyrus at his feet, indicating his interest in writing.

The Antiquities Museum offers three prizes in the painting division and three other prizes in the research division. The competition is divided into three sections: Drawing, Photograpgy, and Research. The competition starts on Monday, 10 October 2022, and runs for one month. Applicants for this competition are accepted from within Alexandria Governorate only. Winners will be announced, and an award ceremony will be organized.
